Anambra state sets to host international sports tournament, YSFON

By Okechukwu Onuegbu

The Anambra State chapter of Youth Sports Federation of Nigeria  (YSFON) has reeled out plans to establish a befitting Sports Excellence Centre as well as position the state to host international sports tournaments within five years.

The State Chairman of YSFON, Mr Akonam Obiefuna, who disclosed this while inaugurating 21 LGA coordinators of the association, hinted that design aspects of the project which included hostel accommodation, had been concluded,  while discussions were on with stakeholders in sports and other partners.

According to him, YSFON was working tirelessly to return the state to her glorious days in sporting events by wooing and celebrating International sports stars of Anambra state extractions with a view to encouraging them to invest home while grooming the younger talents across the nooks and crannies of the state.

“Our aim is that before the next five years, Anambra state shall be hosting any international sports tournament. It could be football, volleyball, athletes and so on. We observed that the major challenge is lack of facility. We are going to establish a sport excellence centre or YSFON games village that will have enough hostel accommodation and other facilities.

“We will also be organising heroes cups to celebrate sports heroes of Anambra state extractions and in the process groom and position young talents to become world champions. There will be under 13, 15, 17 and 19. Some of these activities will kick off by March 2021. Our local government coordinators shall be giving necessary supports to host or organise sporting events at communities or council level to discover talents,” he added.

Speaking in an interview, the YSFON, Njikoka LGA coordinator, Dr Ikenna Nwokedi, assured the state executive of their readiness to deliver on the mandate at grassroots levels.
