Anambra demolish illegal structures at Onistha main market, vows to remove more

By Okechukwu Onuegbu

Anambra State, Sunday, embarked on demolition of illegal structures and shop extensions erected on the tarred roads along Bright Street and White House axis at Onitsha Main Market.

The taskforce led by Mr Felix Umerah said the exercise was carried out in compliance with Governor Chukwuma Soludo's directive that entrance roads into all the markets in the State should be cleared for free flow of human and vehicular movements.

Umerah said "We are removing all the shop attachments and projections that block roads causing obstruction to movements to and fro this market, and reduce our level of sales and patronage from our customers."

Also speaking, the Secretary of Onitsha Main market, Mr Ifediora Obijekwu, complained that some traders abandoned their shops to display wares on the tarred roads, making movements along the roads almost impossible.

Another member of the decongestion committee, Hon. Victor Adizi thanked Governor Soludo, and the Commissioner for Commerce and Industry Dr Obinna Ngonadi for the good works they were doing in the State, which he noted would create a conducive environment for business to thrive in Main Market.
