The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Anambra chapter has hailed the appointment of Mr Patrick Estate Onyedum, as the new Chairman, Anambra State Sports Development Commission (ASSDC).

Governor Chukwuma Soludo had on Sunday, announced that Onyedum, who is Chairman of the Anambra State Athletics Association (AAA), would replace Mr Toni Oli whose tenure as Chairman of the Sports Commission has ended.

According to a Statement from the SWAN Chairman, Mr Tony Oji and the Secretary, Mr Patrick Anaso, Onyedum's appointment was a square peg in a square hole because he possessed a rich pedigree as an athlete and sports administrator.

"It is instructive to note that he did not only take part in active sports, he is at the moment, Chairman of Chairman, Anambra State Athletics Association (AAA) and Southeast representatives in Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) at a time.

"Onyedum as a former transition Committee Chairman of Anaocha Local Government Area organised the annual Anaocha Athletics Championship for secondary schools in the area where young athletes were discovered for grooming. We are convinced that, armed with these records, Onyedum will turn the fortunes of Anambra Sports for good as the chairman of the commission.

"SWAN expresses its readiness to partner with administration in promoting his activities and  also to provide positive critiquing in the overall interest of Anambra athletes sporting community. We thank Governor Chukwuma Soludo for the appointment and urge him to give the new management under Onyedum all the political and financial support it needs to succeed," it added.
