The crisis rocking Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka seemed to be getting worse as Professor Carol Arinze-Umobi, on Monday, assumed duty as Acting Vice Chancellor.

Arinze-Umobi, whose appointment was confirmed by the Federal Government through the ministry of Education last week, took over leadership from the outgone Professor Joseph Ikechebelu whose tenure has ended and is also ambitious of becoming the 7th substantive Vice Chancellor.

That was even as both the Federal government and governing Council of the institution was yet to speak on the petition written against her appointment by the professor of Industrial Sociology and Labour Relations, Nkemdili Austin Nnonyelu (Au).

Nnonyelu had petitioned the university governing Council claiming that appointment of Professor Carol Arinze-Umobi was flawed, wrong and should patently be reversed.

Nnonyelu, in a petition obtained by this reporter, demanded for immediate withdrawal of appointment of Professor Arinze-Umobi, noting that he remains the most qualified and capable hand chosen by the university community to handle the position.

He said he scored 132 votes against 79 votes scored by Arinze-Umobi at election organised by the Senate of Nnamdi Azikiwe University on May 15, 2025 and the result was forwarded to the Council who rather chose present Arinze-Umobi as most qualified for the position, according to Nnonyelu.
