LG boss hails NLC for promoting unity, wellbeing of Anambra workers through sports

The Chairman, Awka South Local Government Area (LGA), Mr Chinedu Okafor, on Monday, commended the leadership of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Anambra State chapter for promoting unity and general well-being among the workers.

Okafor, who stated this at grand finale of the football match organised by the NLC Anambra State chapter held at Awka, observed that sporting activities were useful in providing unity, health and general well-being.

The LG boss represented by Hon. Kingsley Ikebudu, who is his Special Adviser on Youths, Sports, and Special Duties, also commended Anambra workers for supporting governor Chukwuma Soludo’s vision to build a liveable and prosperous state.

Okafor, while enjoining them not to relent as the government and people were aware of their sacrifices, reassured those working under Awka South Council Area of his readiness to improve their welfare.

Earlier speaking, the NLC Chairman, Anambra State Chapter, Comrade Humphrey Nwafor commended workers for participating actively in the football tournament, which he described as a friendly match aimed at promoting healthy living, solidarity, entertainment and unity.

The match had ended with the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) emerging as champion after defeating the Nigeria Union of Mine Workers (NUMW) 2-1 in the keenly contested game.

“The programme started on Monday, featuring players who are members of civil servants in Anambra. As we know, these unions are key governance bodies in the state. We have about 40 unions in the state, with around 37 active ones. The aim is to bring affiliate unions together, fostering brotherhood and keeping company to each other,” he noted.

According to him, the NLC has also rolled out free medical tests and training of over 2000 Anambra workers as part of the events to commemorate the year’s worker’s day under the initiative tagged: “know your status.”

The event is billed to hold on April 30th in collaboration with the State Ministry of Health and wife of Governor Chukwuma Soludo, Dr Nonye Soludo Healthy Living Initiative.

“On 30th April, at 10am, we’ll be having healthy living with the wife of the Executive Governor, Dr Nonye Soludo, where the Ministry of Health, Healthy Living Initiative will come and talk to over 2,000 workers. They will teach us about healthy living and what it takes to live a healthy life. We considered this because when we make wealth without good health, the wealth is useless,” he said.

Also speaking, the Chairman, NLC May Day Planning Committee, Comrade Odogwu Emeka Odogwu, commended the NLC Chairman over purposeful and visionary leadership which according to him, were why he slated several programmes and activities to improve workers welfare.

Odogwu, who is also the Chairman of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Anambra State, disclosed other line-up of activities of NLC to include: Session with Anambra Small Business Agency (ASBA), a gala night, and the grand finale at the Alex Ekwueme square on May 1, 2025. He also said thanksgiving outing would mark the end of the 2025 workers day activities.
