Democracy day: We have overcome adversities, challenges—philanthropist

By Okechukwu Onuegbu

As Nigeria marks her 21st democracy day, Anambra state born business mogul and philanthropist, Mr Valentine Ozigbo, has expressed happiness  that the country was overcoming adversities and challenges her in several ways and on several fronts.

Ozigbo, who made the observation is his democracy day message, maintained that democracy has come to stay in Nigeria, and charged the citizenry to deepen their engagement and investment in preserving it.

According to the immediate past President and CEO of Transcorp Plc, “ In several ways, and on several fronts, we have overcome adversities and challenges. We have come out of these challenges stronger and determined to build a secure, stable, equitable, prosperous, and democratic Nigeria.”

He also acknowledged that though the democratic experiment had not been perfect, there are still aspects of it that ought to be celebrated, and urged Nigerians “to take a moment to ponder on our recent past, evaluate the present, and strategize on the future of our dear country.”

Ozigbo, who is also a governorship aspirant of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the forthcoming Anambra state gubernatorial poll, however, observed that the biggest challenges currently facing the country was economic injustice “ threatening the foundation of our existence as one country”.

He, therefore, enjoined leaders at all levels to take a look at the various calls for restructuring of the country’s economic model, which according to him, would create a more inclusive economy that works for every Nigerian irrespective of their tribe, gender, or religion.

“That would be one right step in forging a strong, indivisible nation based on equity, fairness, and justice,” he said.
