Tension rocks Abia State as kidnappers takeover roads

Kidnappers and armed men have taken over the boundary road  between Uturu in Isiukwiato local government area of Abia state and Okigwe local government of lmo state.


Our reporter investigation revealed that hardy any two days without these men of underworld kidnapping, maiming  and killing people along the road .


It was also gathered that between December to January about 25 persons have kidnapped while about five  have killed , even with two security check points.


However,residents of Uturu Community  have expressed concerns over state of killings and kidnappings along Okigwe - Uturu describing the situation as getting out of hands .


They said  In the last two weeks, no fewer than 25 persons were kidnapped and five killed at Ihube junction, with security check point . 


President General of Uturu community , Chief Chidi Uturu Ogbaegbe, who spoke to our correspondent in an interview said that the perpetrators of the heinous acts often take advantage of a dilapidated spot along Ihube - Okigwe Road where they waylay passengers and either kidnap them for ransom or shoot them outrightly.


He saud, " The situation along this road that links Imo with the Abia state, especially the Abia State University is one that has been giving us serious concerns .


"The road has become almost impassable because of the activities of kidnappers and murderers . It's no longer safe for students and members of the University community to go to Imo State. In fact, anybody travelling through that road always have their hearts on their hands because you are not sure to come back alive."



Ogbaegbe expressed regret that this is happening despite the existence of many checkpoints along the busy road.


He called on law enforcement agencies to ensure that the road is made safe for the travelling public.


Also speaking to Daily Trust on the condition of anonymity, a student of a big state university Uturu ,who lives in okigwe   said that studying in the university is now a threat to their lives.

According to the sources ,the students of the university are finding it difficult to move okigwe to ABSU.


"My worry now is that both limo and Abia stats government are not showing interesting to ensuring that the security will end .

We cannot go to school often because of threat to life.   I am calling on the two state government to intervene and save the ugly situation "he said
