Anambra Vigilante detains pregnant woman over husband's alleged stealing

A pregnant from Okija, Ihiala Local Government Area (LGA), Anambra State has been allegedly detained by members of State Vigilante Group after husband was accused of stealing.


According to a viral video, a woman whose name could not be obtained was detained by the vigilante because her husband that was alleged to have stolen could not be found or arrested to face prosecution.


The Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr Tochukwu Ikenga, who confirmed the report, on Wednesday, said the command has rescued the woman, assuring that the root cause of the incidents would be addressed to avert future occurrence. 


"The Anambra State Police Command has rescued a pregnant woman allegedly detained over a case of stealing by her husband in a Security Office at Okija. The report of the incident was intercepted in a trending video by the State Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Obono Itam as he ordered rescue operations and an investigation into the report.


"Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police frowns at such acts of indiscriminate detention and inhuman treatment of suspects by some members of the Anambra Vigilante Group (AVG). He also initiated necessary moves with relevant authorities to checkmate the excesses of the few unprofessional AVG members in the State," he added.
