Stop exposing identity of minors in your report, NUJ urges reporters

 





The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Anambra State Council has urged members and media generally to refrain from exposing minors in their reports due to psychological traumas associated to that.


The Council, in a communique raised at end of their February 2025 congress signed by the Chairman, Comrade Dr Odogwu Emeka Odogwu, and Secretary, Comrade Dr Okechukwu Onuegbu described it as unethical practices


"Congress frowned at the unethical attitude of some journalists who expose the identity of minors using pictures especially in crime reports, as such may jeopardize the future of the children via stigmatization," it added. 


The communique also enjoined journalists to be professional while covering the 2025 Governorship election through reporting accurate and unbiased reportage, as well as avoid unruly behaviour in the field, including ambulance chasing particularly at events uninvited or gate crashed by focusing on the event rather than other pecuniary to earn respect.


The congress, however, appreciated the candidates campaigning to take over the vacant seat of late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah at Anambra South senatorial zone for maintaining civility and decorum in their campaign activities so far, urging them to remain on facts and what they can do rather than campaign of calumny.


On activities of Anambra's recently launched operation udo gá-achị, the NUJ commended governor Chukwuma Soludo for rising to the challenge of insecurity in the state, urging him to sustain the tempo.


"Congress, therefore, welcomed the operation udo-ga-achi, and, Agunechemba security outfit but appealed to the outfit to do well to rescue kidnapped victims alive where possible. Congress further encouraged Ndi Anambra to see themselves as part of the security efforts of the government by saying something when they see something," it added.


The communique further commended Hon Prof Lilian Orogbu, a member representing Awka North and South Federal constituency in the National Assembly for donating 20 bags of 50 kg bags of Rice to the NUJ Anambra to share during the February 2025 Congress, and governorship candidate in Anambra, Chief Valentine Ozigbo for supporting the hosting of the February 2025 Congress of the NUJ with N300,000.
