At least two persons including an award winning mobile town crier and Master of Ceremony, Mr Isaac Nwosu, have been shot dead in Awka, Anambra State as unidentified gunmen suspected to be cultist raided the capital city.
Blueprint gathered that the gunmen who came in a silver-coloured Toyota Corolla, with no registration number on Sunday night, drove through major streets including Capital City Road, Amaenyi, and S.M. Okeke Street, Amaikwo, shooting indiscriminately on air with people scampering for safety.
According to an eyewitness, Mr Kenechukwu Okoye, the shootings left many wounded even as one of the victims, late Nwosu also known as Aiza Nwosu was shot inside his moving mobile announcement van, leaving him dead as music played.
"The unknown gunmen afterwards, drove towards another part of the Amaenyi area, close to St. Peter's Catholic Church, Nkwelle Awka and started shooting indiscriminately. Again, a man was shot dead at the scene with a headshot, opening his brain and spilling the brain to the floor, with another person, sustaining a gunshot injury," he alleged.
The State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Mr Tochukwu Ikenga, who confirmed the incident said the Commissioner of Police, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, described it as a dastardly act, unacceptable and a direct affront to the peace and security of Anambra State.
" Upon receipt of the distress information, Command operatives immediately mobilised patrol teams to the affected areas and commenced efforts to track down the assailants. The operatives also recovered from the scenes the sum of ₦7,550, one Moniepoint ATM card and a pair of slippers. The Command is calling for the support and cooperation of members of the public to assist in bringing the suspects to justice.
"The CP has further directed the transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Awka, for discreet and comprehensive investigation, while security operatives have intensified patrols, surveillance and intelligence gathering across Awka and adjoining areas," he added.
