We've Reduced Theft and Vandalism Among Scrap Dealers in Anambra - Osisikankwu

By Tobias Ekirika

Mr. Izuchukwu Ibekailo (also known as Osisikankwu), the Chairman of the Scraps Automobile Metal Market in Obolo Obosi and head of the Anti-Vandalism Taskforce in Anambra State, has detailed how his team has effectively combated the vandalism of government and private properties in the area.

Prior to the establishment of the Anti-Vandalism Taskforce by the Anambra government, vandalism incidents were rampant, with reports of such activities emerging weekly. However, since the taskforce's inauguration in mid-2026, there has been an impressive over 90% reduction in cases of vandalism.

In an interview with journalists in Onitsha on November 3, Mr. Ibekailo attributed the taskforce’s success to the remarkable commitment and bravery of its members. He stated, "Our main duty is to check incidents of vandalism being perpetrated by some scrap dealers across the state. We are here to secure Anambra State and ensure that acts of vandalism against public and private properties are properly addressed. The Anti-Vandalism Taskforce has a presence in all scrap markets within Anambra State, ensuring that no vandal can escape our scrutiny."

Ibekailo recounted a recent operation where the taskforce intercepted a truck transporting stolen wire and iron poles. "These items were taken from government property and were on their way to the scrap market when our team intervened. We arrested those involved and handed them over to the police for prosecution. We’ve executed similar operations across the state, leading to a significant decrease in the number of criminals who previously operated under the guise of scrap dealers."

To maintain this momentum, Ibekailo emphasized that taskforce members conduct regular inspections of vehicles brought into scrap markets, as many stolen vehicles end up being sold for scrap. "Now, the Anambra government is actively combating these issues, resulting in a much calmer environment. Reports of vandalism have become rare."

He expressed a commitment to sustaining the progress made against vandalism, urging a collective effort to maintain a sanity in the state.
