Oko poly Mass Com. Dept. gets radio station, NUJ chapel

Anambra State Council of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), on Tuesday, inaugurated Moment 98.7 FM, a radio station outfit of Department of Mass Communication, Federal Polytechnic Oko, as 20th chapel of the union, with a charge on media practitioners to uphold ethical codes of the profession.

Speaking at the occasion, the state Council Chairman, Comrade Emmanuel Ifesinachi, charged journalists practising in the medium to remain assets to the industry like the department by observing all the ethical codes of the journalism profession.

“We are going to integrate the chapel as one of us and carry them on in our activities in the state. We have different trainings holding periodically in the state council, and we urge you to always come out to participate. 

"We are comfortable inaugurating this chapel because it is owned by the centre of excellence. This institution has trained many journalists in all field of journalism across the country.

“NUJ is umbrella body of practising journalists in Nigeria. The centre of practising journalism is ethical requirements. We know you train students and your lecturers are grounded in the field. One of your lecturers, Comrade Victor Agusiobo was our two term state Chairman. 

"Your HOD is equally doing great. Therefore, we want you to emulate them and abide by the ethics of this profession,” he said.

He also informed them on the need to actively participate on the forthcoming NUJ media summit holding on 12 and 13 September, 2019.

Also speaking, Secretary of the union, Comrade Emma Udeagha, assured that partnership with the council would be beneficial to journalism profession.

In a response, Chairman of the chapel and Head of Mass Communication Department of the institution, Dr Onyeka Uwakwe, assured the union that they would continue to train professional journalists, noting that it was a pet project every journalists must identify with 

“We will continue to do our best in promoting the NUJ in the state through adequate training to our students. Most of us belong to other professional bodies. But we see this one as a pet project we must identify with. We are happy to become integral part of NUJ, “ he added.

He said the department and radio station performed excellently on their recent accreditation processes and would continue driving to present best practitioners in the industry in academic and practical via radio, television and newspaper.
