Potassium nutrient in plantain good for hypertensive patients says dietician


A Registered  Dietician  Nutritionist,  Miss Nonyerem  Nnebe with Chukwuemeka Odimegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital Amaku,  has called on the people to eat more of plantain because of its nutrients content.

Nnebe said that  plantain contains micro nutrients like  potassium which is very good for hypertensive patients  in an interview with News men on Saturday  in  Awka

 She said that plantains contains very rich nutrients like, magnesium, Carbohydrates   and , calcium  which the body needs for proper growth and devellllopment .

 Nnebe said that plantain contains   more of   calories   because of its carbohydrates value  and is regarded as energy giving food.

She said that plantain   has a minute quantity of iron which also plays its role in human development but not as much as people considers while forming their decision on eating the food.

 “ I want to disabuse the minds of people who believes that Plantain has high iron deposit in it, no, it does not but it has more calories and gives energy, it is an energy giving food. 

 “ Plantains  are energy giving food which can be prepared in various ways  like into porridges, boiled,  fried, chips among others,” she said

 She said that people   who are diabetic should not eat more of plantain believing that it has high iron content  but must eat plantain because of its variety of meals that it provides.

 “ The potassium contents is very good for elderly, is also  heart friendly and diabetics patients need to eat plantain with  lots of vegetables as well,” she said .

 Mrs  Fidelia  Nwaugha, a plantains seller said that this is the season of plantain and is very affordable as people patroness them  in large numbers now that is in the season.

 “ we sell plantain now in  its head  between N700, N1000 to N2500 depending on the size , then its part we sell between N200  to N400 depending on it size,

“But once it is out of season it would be sold between N1500 and above and the N200 to N400 ones  would be sold  up to N500 to N800 all depends on the size,” she said .



She said that plantain is a very good food item to alternate with other meals instead of eating one type of meal always.

 She appealed to the   government or wealthy individuals to  encourage farmers by creating  plantain plantation so as to have the produce  all year round.

 Miss Ogochukwu Nkwonocha , another  plantain seller said that plantain is a seasonal farm produce which usually runs out of season from  March to July of every year.

And  that it sells high at the time is out of season  but from the month of August till February it would be in season  and affordable for all who enjoys it to buy.

 Nkwonocha  said that during the out of season of the produce it would be difficult to trade on  due to  its high cost in buying because they buy from farmers who puts the cost so up.

She said that the high cost was due to the process the farmer under go to keep the item  in supply all year round .

She appealed to government to make plans for plantain  to  be cultivated all round the year so that people would not be out of business.

And also to ensure that buyers  see the item to buy at will to enjoy the nutrients  found in  plantain.

 Nkwonocha said when plantain goes off season it  lowers patronage of the item  due to its high cost of selling  and it  makes  them to look for another business to do till its next  season.

 “ When  it  is out of season a  head will be sold between  N2,500 and above  against  between  N1000, 2000, 800,that its sells  now that it is in season .

“plantain head shared in 4 or 6 pieces would be sold between N600 and above,” she said .

She appealed  to the state  government to provide plantain plantation for continues planting of plantain by   farmers who farm on the item  so as to be able to have it in supply chain all year round ,” she said

Mrs Tonia Anagor told journalists that she enjoys plantains especially when fried and that it comes handy in the home menu .

Anagor said that it helps her in making meals for her children lunch while going to school but once it goes off season it really tasking alternating meals.

Miss Mmesoma Mbachi, a students said that plantain is her best food any how is cooked and appealed to government to create a plantain plantation so that the item would be available and affordable all round the year .
