Right group urges Anambra CP to discover, punish police extortionists

Right Group Tasks Anambra CP on Bad Eggs

The Anambra State Commissioner
of Police, John Abang, has been asked to look inward to discover those bad eggs in his Command who engage in extortion of road users.

The Human Right,  Liberty Access, and Peace Defenders Foundation  (HURIDE), which made the call in Awka, the Anambra State, lamented that some Policemen in the State especially Onitsha were engaged in extorting of the motorists and Keke operators.

The chairman, Board of Trustees of HURIDE, Dede Uzor A. Uzor, alleged that Policemen contributes  some percentage for daily traffic gridlock at the Onitsha Bridgehead (Under Bridge),Ziks Roundabouts,Niger street via Main Market,Upper Iweka flyover, Onitsha Owerri by Mythological Institute,Owerri road by Aba park opposite New Tarzan motors, Oba old road near Igwe's palace, Onitsha Obosi bypass among other strategic areas because they were bent in collecting money from commercial motorists and Keke drivers.

He then asked the Commissioner of Police to do something drastic as he did in arresting those who were extorting money under the bridge last week.

The right group equally appealed to the Commissioner to also look into the uniforms worn by  his men at various check points, stating there are about seven different  uniforms they wear.

Dede Uzor "let them wear identifiable uniforms.
Some of them put on ragtag uniforms or sometimes civilian clothing in a official road duties.

It does not portray the good image of the Police".

HURIDE however, lauded  the Commissioner of Police for his prompt action in arresting some officers  who were engaged in extortion of money from motorists and Keke operators  under the River Niger bridge.

The group also commended the Inspector-General of Police (IG), the CP and the State Police Command image maker, Haruna Mohammed , for organising the Police Public Relations Officers'conferrnce in Anambra State.

The group particularly commended the IG for his committment to redeem the image of the Nigerian Police Force.

They also lauded the Onitsha Area Commander, Mr. John Obuagbaka, an Assistant Commissioner (ACP), for his no nonsense approach to crime fighting in Onitsha and environs.

He called on the Police High command  to draft Obuagbaka to  Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFFC), where his potentials  would be fully put into use.
"We also commend them for being proactive in checkmating crime in the State and putting their officers and men in different parts of the State especially the bad one who engage in extortion under check" the group said.

He said CP's  foresight  and pragmatism  showed he is an IG material, saying that he is the only CP who had visited virtually all the institutions and sister agencies in the State.

This, no doubt, said Dede Uzor was to ensure unity of purpose and inter-agency cooperation among others.
