We're under pressure to reopen schools, Anambra Education Commissioner

By Okechukwu Onuegbu

Anambra State Commissioner for Basic Education, Prof. Kate Omenugha, has said the state was not in a hurry to reopen schools despite calls from Primary and Secondary Schools teachers in the state to that effect.

Omenugha, in a media chat, said that the school closure was in the best interest of pupils and students, and going contrary to that amounts to risking their lives.

"We are not going to reopen the schools and risk lives of our children to COVID-19 pandemic. We are receiving calls from some teachers asking us to  resume, we care for our children too but best practice need be followed,’’she said.

According to her, schools were shut down on March 24 to prevent the spreading of Coronavirus pandemic and at the federal government would at an approximate time order schools to be reopened nationwide.

“ We introduced on the air teaching programme and use of face book and YouTube in academic interaction with the students, just to keep them alert. When schools eventually resume, we are not going to use only the traditional face-to-face method of learning but we will also teach the children through electronic and online media,” she said.
