The Senior Secondary School Examination has started in Anambra on August 17, with participating schools and students strictly observing the COVID -19 protocol initiated by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control.
News men reports that Two hundred and fifty-seven Secondary Schools in the State are taking part in the Examination being conducted by West African Examination Council in the country.
Our reporter who monitored the process reports in Ogidi, Idemili North Local Government Area of the state on Thursday that some schools visited was COVID-19 compliance.
The State Government had two weeks ago had fumigated , cut overgrown grasses and distributed hand sanitisers and face masks to teachers in preparatory to the conduct of the examination.
Mrs Chinenye Ekeh , Principal of Anglican Girls Secondary School Ogidi said that there was strict compliance with COVID- 19 protocol as the students sat two metres apart, for their examination.
“ When they resumed to the boarding house we sent female security to be with them while in the hostel to monitor their activities while in their hostel.
“ Mathematics was their first paper we tried to space out as advised, the student came back with their five face mask and shield, we are covid -19 pandemic compliance, ”she said
Ekeh said that she was optimistic about the performance of the students in the ongoing WAEC exams because they were well prepared in spite of the lock down.
Ekeh said that the school were in need of security officers, insulation centre and support to maintain the shool to measure up to standard.
Miss Chinwendum Ogbaji , Senior Prefect of the school said the examination has been going on well since it started and commended the school management for providing basic facilities for the well being of the students.
Miss Oluebube Onuegbu, SS3 student said that they were well prepared because lots of assignments was given to them while at homes and on the air teaching was orgainsed by the state for the students.
Miss Chindmma Oraonu another student expressed happiness that the Examination finally commenced against all odds pointing out that COVID -19 lockdown which delayed the exercise was a blessing in disguise.
Oraonu said that the Covid -19 made the students to be more familiar with the internet and how to use the social media applications very well, though we missed physical teaching by our teachers.
Mrs Amaka Ubaka, the Principal Ide Secondary School in Enugwu-Ukwu, Njikoka LGA said that the school had received lots of assistance from the host community in clearing the school environment.
Ubaka said that a philanthropist from the community provided over 100 face shield for the students while the students were asked to come to school with mask masks.
She said that the examination has been going on well since its commencement and that they had not recorded any emergency.
Ubaka said that the student were properly sensitised on Hall management and confidence building to make them perform better and manage their self well to avoid contracting the deadly virus.
Ubaka commended the state for various training given to them during the covid -19 lockdown which had helped in management.
Mr Jovita Asuzu, Principal of Igwebuike Grammar School, Awka, Awka South LGA , said he was happy s over the commencement of the examinations which had recorded success on the 2020 academic schedules .
Asuzu said that ahead of the examination, the Ministry of Basic Education sensitised and trained heads of schools on what they were expected to do to ensure success of the examination .
He said that his school also made provisions for a sick bay, infrared thermometers and other things needed to guard against the spread of coronavirus.
Asuzu also said he was hopeful a good performance in the examination, because the state ministry of education planned well for their academic success.
“ There was lots of online and whatupapp teaching and physical preparations embarked upon by the teachers and students.
reports that schools monitored recorded high compliance with COVID-19 directives as schools had hand washing buckets, detergents and sanitisers and posters pasted in school areas in their entrances.
Also that schools reassured that the students were well equipped for the examination, despite the coronavirus pandemic and appreciated efforts put in place by government, relevant agencies and other stakeholders to ensure that the examination was held.
The State Commissioner for Education, Prof Kate Omenugha said that the teachers wee well tutored on what to do on resumption and was happy the students were back to take their examinations.
Omenugha said that she was impressed with the conduct of the students and teachers and assured them of the State Government’s commitment towards ensuring a hitch free Examination.
She said that Health workers were deployed to schools to ensure that temperature of students were checked before being allowed into the Halls and encouraged students to build up confidence .
Omenugha assured that adequate safety measures were in place for the process of the examination and promised to assist anywhere the need arises.
reports that the students were concluding on their practical’s examination and would be taking English in Literature on August 21 and Home Management on Saturday August 22
