Anambra State High Court sitting at Ogidi, Idemili North Local Government Area (LGA), has sentenced a 44-year-old man, Mr Chidubem Anawonwa to death by hanging for allegedly killing his 74-year-old mother, Theresa Anawonwa.
Chidubem, a native of Umuokokpa, Aborji Village in Oba, Idemili South LGA, it was learnt, inflicted bruises on his mother and strangled her to death on 23rd April, 2019 when he was still 37 years old after locking up his young niece that was living with them.
The judge, Justice Lauretta Oyeka, who convicted Chidubem explained that the offence was contrary to Section 271 of Criminal Code Cap. 36 Revised Laws of Anambra State, 1991 as amended.
The court also dismissed the defense of alibi by Chidubem who was represented on pro-bono, arguing that the testimonies of five prosecution witnesses were enough to sentence him accordingly.
The Chief State Counsel, Obiageli Nwankiti, and a Principal State Counsel, Uju Igboeli, had in charge no. HID/7C/2020, revealed Chidubem's long history of violence against his mother, including physical abuse and death threats.
