Entrench good governance, stop rights violation in Anambra, multiple taxation, group urges Soludo

Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR), a right group, Friday, urged Anambra State governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo to device mechanisms and programmes capable of promoting good governance and addressing right violation and multiple taxation issues. 



CDHR, at the end of its 2023 Annual General Conference (AGC) held in Awka, the State capital under a theme, human rights and good governance an entitlement to all journey so far and way forward, argued that expectations were high since election of the governor in 2021 but he seemed to be disappointing them.



The National President of the group, Dr Kehinde Taiga, said the world eyes were on the governor to utilise his experience as an economist and former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to revamp the State economy and not to create more hardship on people through multiple taxation.



"I urge governor Soludo as Professor to profess well to Anambra. Don't profess failure to your state but bring a massive development. How can a state of a professor have only 4 teachers in a public primary school? Only the State Internal Revenue was enough to develop the State; put schools in order, construct roads and others," he stated.



Also speaking, the National Vice President of CDHR, Comrade Chibuzo Chikwendu, while urging the governor to use human face in his activities, observed that many State infrastructure were falling and dilapidating, and should be fixed urgently.



Contributing, the Chairman of the occasion, Comrade Sunny Enenuvwedia, charged Anambra State residents to hold the government accountable from the ward to community, local government and state levels by getting involved in the happenings to detect, investigate and hold every public officer accountable always.


 


Enenuvwedia, who is a former National President of the CDHR, regretted that many were busy talking about the federal government whereas the States, LGAs and communities were been ruined by politicians and scrupulous elements through entrenchments of bad leadership, rights violation and high-handedness.



The group had during the event reelected Dr. Prince Kehinde Taiga as National President; while electing Comrade Chibuzo Chikwendu as National Vice President; Comrade Gerald Katchy- National General Secretary; Comrade Michael Olokungboye, National Treasurer; Comrade Jude Adimekwe, National Assistant Secretary; Comrade GodsPower Ugah, National Publicity Secretary; and Comrade Ifechigha Chinaza - National Internal Auditor.
