At least one person died with another injured at a road crash involving a commercial vehicle and private driver at Okija, Ihiala Local Government Area, Anambra State.
According to sources, the incident which occurred around 5.30pm at Ihembosi junction by Onitsha-Owerri expressway left one other person injured while seven others were rescued unhurt.
The Federal Road Safety Corps, Anambra State Command State which confirmed the incident, noted that the driver of one of the vehicles was identified as Mr. Kings Johnson with a Nissan commercial bus and registration number: NEM608XA belonging to Rivers Joy Mass Transit, and an unidentified driver of a Nissan Pathfinder Jeep whose registration number was not found because the driver did not stop.
The State Sectors Commander FRSC, Mr Adeoye Irelewuyi, who spoke through the Acting Sector Public Education Officer, Mrs Margaret B Onabe, described the probable cause of the accident as Route Violation (RTV) and Speed.
"According to eyewitness, the Nissan Pathfinder Jeep driver was driving against traffic on speed from OKIJA axis and hit the Rivers Joy Mass Transit vehicle by the side. The bus driver loss control of his vehicle, sulmalsulted and crashed.
"10 people comprising (4 male adults, 5 female adults and 1 male child ) were involved in the crash. One female adult was killed. One male adult and one female adult were injured and 7 rescued unhurt.
"Before the arrival of FRSC rescue team from RS5.34 Ihialla Unit Command to the crash scene, the victims were rushed to F.S Kings Hospital Umuohi IHEMBOSI by the community youths while the dead victim was deposited at same hospital mortuary.
"FRSC Rescue team on ground managed the traffic and ensured obstruction caused by the crash was removed. The Sector Commander Anambra State Corps Commander Adeoye Irelewuyi sympathised with the family of the dead victim and wishes the injured victims quick recovery," he noted.
He further charged Anambra State motorist to desist from one way driving as it amounts to dangerous driving and drive within safe speed limit.
